Thursday:
Bodycheck
Peter Scherr’s Creative Music in China is back in town with Bodycheck, made up of Scherr, Teddy Kumpel, and Briggan Krauss. Scherr is my personal favorite bass player in Greater China (he’s based in Hong Kong) and the projects he’s involved in are all very creative (the umbrella is confusing, but one thing most of his projects have in common is a healthy dose of improvisation) and musicianship is always of the highest caliber. Here’s what Kumpel’s Myspace has to say about the group: “Despite what the multi layered sound might tell you, everything you hear from Teddy Kumpel on record and stage is played live. With innovative use of looping technology and his vast experience mangling vintage sounds Teddy Kumpel effortlessly creates myriad textures that make you think there must be a whole slew of musicians hiding backstage. A veritable funkdafied psychadelic orchestra posing as a rock trio!” Kumpel has been a sought after session guitarist and producer in New York for some time, and Briggan Krauss has made a name for himself in the expanded jazziverse there as well. Downtown NY in Shanghai! Bring it on.

2009 DMC China Final + Afterparty
Intrepid turntablists from all over China will compete to be the representative sent to the London finals. It will surely be ridiculously illsane. Plus you get all that action and free entry to the Shelter afterparty if you hold on to your DMC ticket. There will be guests from Invisible Skratch Piklz at both events, and more support from the lab crew at the after party.

Lions of Puxi
Shanghai’s premier party band brings their French-Mauritian reggae, soul, rock, R&B, and Humorous-Sting-Covers-with-Chinese-Lyrics show to that skanky basement known as Mural. It’s been too long since they’ve rocked our minds, bodies, and souls, so get on down there.

Saturday:
Antidote feat. Mochipet
Antidote again in the spot! They’re bringing nerd-hop giant monster enthusiast Mochipet with them this time for a live set. Myspace says: “For this episode, he presents a sampling of some of the new material he’s been using to destroy sound systems and convert nonbelievers. It’s a massive thing, spastic but tightly controlled, somewhere between dubstep, glitch hop, ghettotech, and syrup-fueled Southern hip hop. And this shit absolutely lays waste to a dancefloor.” Sounds good to me. Support comes from the capable hands of DJs Blaise, Trix, B6, R3, and Ozone.

DIAN
Minimal Techno at LOgO from DIAN with guest DJ Charp and the DIAN regulars Skinny Babou and Ming Yu. As a fad minimal seems to have fizzled a bit here in Shanghai, but these guys are clearly all about it, so go see what’s up.

Sunday:
Sunjam
It’s been quite a while since I headed down to Xingfu Lu for a jam session, but they were always a fun if sloppy hang. John Ngagwahooha has moved down the street to Anar and the host now seems to be a DJ. Definitely a fun hang and if it’s not really happening you can always go to Anar.
