2009 Brit Award nominations are out…

The Brits are the largest music awards in the UK. This year’s nominees have just been announced, with Coldplay and Duffy receiving the most, including for Best British Album. They are joined in that category by Elbow, Radiohead and The Ting Tings. If you’re not familiar with Brit-rock group Elbow, I thoroughly recommend checking out their latest album The Seldom Seen Kid, and lead singer Guy Garvey’s weekly radio show on BBC 6Music (most BBC material is available online for up to a week is after it is broadcast; check out Guy’s show here).

The proceedings are not all so serious, as nominees for Best British Group include Take That and Girls Aloud (a sort of post-Spice Girls, British version of Pussycat Dolls). w00t. If either of them win, I’m burning my passport. Also conspicuous by their absence are Oasis.

When it comes to international acts, however, the judges clearly felt less imaginative. AC / DC, Fleet Foxes, The Killers, Kings of Leon and MGMT are all nominated for both Best International Group and Best International Album. I just can’t believe they didn’t follow through and put the Pussycat Dolls forward…

Critic’s Choice Award this year goes to Florence and the Machine. The stripped back blues and folk indie act has received critical acclaim after a successful year of festival appearances including SXSW and Bestival. Check out their MySpace.

The award ceremony itself is on February 18th, 2100-2300GMT, and will be broadcast on the telly and by BBC Radio 2.
