Yuyingtang to Host the 2009 Global Battle of the Bands

The Shanghai heat of the GBOB, that is. My friends asked me why I didn’t enter the world’s biggest live music competition again this year, but Defending Champion isn’t a title that suits me. I am not much into battling; I’m a lover not a fighter, especially when it comes to music.

However, I am helping to run the show this year, and quite stoked to say we are moving everything up a notch. Yuyingtang will be the proud hosts of the GBOB on September 27 and I can’t imagine a better time of year to have a musical buffet there. Attendees will get to experience ten bands in three hours, as each band can only play for 8 minutes and it’s ORIGINAL MUSIC ONLY. The winners will be flown to Hong Kong and put up in a hotel for three nights; they may play a paid gig or two and then compete with the winners of the GBOB from Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau in the China Final on November 7. The winner of the China final will go on to London for the World Final, to represent China and compete against the winners from 30 other countries on December 13. If they take first place there, they will win a week in the studio in London with a producer, a 10 date UK tour and $10,000 in cash. It’s all pretty exciting stuff. Last year, when my band THE DOVETAIL JOINTS took the Shanghai title, we won a bunch of cool prizes, played a lot of great music in Hong Kong and then spent a day at the beach together hanging out for hours on a raft (my drummer got sun burnt!) as the weather is still nice in Hong Kong in November. Not only is it guaranteed good times but I think it’s a great opportunity for bands looking to move forward in their career and get some exposure.

For those of you just wanting to experience the best 8 minutes our Shanghai bands can offer, 50rmb at the door gets you in with a voting slip which will count as 25% of the vote, with the other 50% coming from our carefully chosen judges from the Shanghai music community. It will be an evening jam packed with new music and a wide variety of sounds starting at 9pm, so for sure there will be something for everyone.

Let’s get ready to RUMBLE!
