Editor's Picks April 15-18

Grandmaster Flash

Whoa! One of the earliest DJs and hip-hop guys ever plays a DJ set at Mao (not livehouse). I’m hesitant to pick a name DJ playing at a see-and-be-seen place, but this guy was the first guy to scratch on a record! With Dan Battle warming up and Razor warming down.

MAO, 46 Yueyang Lu near Dongping Lu

150 RMB at the door, 100 presale (13916017643)

Miniless Electric Waves

In addition to awesome experimentalish rock bands, miniless has some cool weird electronic artists on its books, like Sunye (who is also playing bass with Booji) and Confirm-x. MHP is down with Void and SIG and MIA are Shanghai-based DJs who may or may not be formally signed with Miniless. Should be interesting regardless.

YuYinTang, 851 Kaixuan Lu near Yan’an Xi Lu

40 RMB cover

Dingiswayo Juma

The first ever pick to be held at an international school, namely Shanghai Community International School. He’s an mbira player from Zimbabwe. Mbira is an African thumb piano, the practice of which instrument is known for being loaded with beautiful melodies and hip poly-rhythms. Dig those sweet looking mbiras in the picture. He has been in town for a little while and word is that he’s awesome.

Stegosaurus? CD Release Pizza Party

The awesome and fun Shanghai laowai band Stegosaurus adds pizza to the popular CD release show format, raising the bar for all others to come. Seriously, this band is fun and awesome. To look at them they are clearly some hip intellectuals, but they use their hip intellectual powers not for evil but to add clever flourishes to their unbridled rock energy. With Boys Climbing Ropes, Rainbow Danger Club, Dragon Pizza, Baby #13 and free pizza.

YuYinTang, 851 Kaixuan Lu near Yan’an Xi Lu

7:30 Show starts, 8:30 pizza attack, 9:00 show continues

Cangelosi Cards Jam Session

I know I know, I pick the House of Blues and Jazz jam session almost every week, but 1) It’s fun, and musicians can escape the otherwise high prices there on Sundays, when you get half off if you sit in, and 2) The Cangelosi Cards are awesome, and I’m not playing with them anymore so there’s no conflict of interest in my saying that. Though they play a traditional style, there’s a wonderful feeling of space and freedom in what they do if you listen closely.

Continuing with the stuff from that link, Jasmine Chen, Mark Bai, and I continue to rock Mondays at HoB&J this month, and it’s getting better and better. You might get a chance to hear my hot new arrangement of the Love Radio 103.7 theme this week.

House of Blues and Jazz, 60 Fuzhou Lu near Sichuan Lu and the Bund

9:30-1:30 (Sunday) and 9:30-12:30 (Monday)

I’m pretty sure the Dingiswayo gig is 6-8 PM plus there is supposedly free African food and wine. I hope it’s Ethiopian. I miss baby food.

Anar is having their second anniversary this Sunday evening, an alternative for house of blues and jazz this Sunday, for those less bluesy and jazzy.
John will be there guiding a jam session with some extra guests to the usual Sundays. Their new back room was a little disappointing, but they have had nice moments with music, hopefully they’ll figure out a best way to show the live music they’re still showing on the front room.

    Ooh, more Sunday action:
