Thursday:

Antidote Funk Night

Antidote has grown from a small but faithfully attended one-Thursday-per-month party at C’s to a giant multinational organization. Rumor has it that Timothy Geithner is now taking orders directly from them, but Antidote is still continuing their party for the people, where they can mingle directly and get a sense of what the average Wang’s booty shaking concerns are. This time it’s funk spun by Blaise, Ozone, Alan Shanyinde, Dan Battle, and others.

C’s Bar, 685 Dingxi Lu between Fahuazhen Lu and Yan’an Lu

9:00-4:00

Friday:

Wang Jian and Xu Zhong Recital

It’s a homecoming show for cellist Wang and pianist/conductor Xu, two of Shanghai’s favorite classical music sons. They both have extensive touring commitments, which luckily for us include Shanghai this year. They will play Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff.

Concert Hall at Oriental Art Center, 425 Dingxiang Lu near the Science and Technology Museum

7:30 start

Tickets: 80, 180, 280, 380, 480, 680 RMB. Check here for availability.

DJ Kentaro

It’s turntable wizardry that will set your eyeballs on fire from this DMC champ. If youtube were working I would show you crazy videos. Word is that his performances are not only dazzling, but also fun, a key factor with this sort of thing.

Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu

10:00 start

60 RMB cover

Saturday:

Battles

It’s another home run from promoters/booking agents Split Works. This far out unclassifiable band popular with hipsters etc. make a stop in China. They’re probably the most interesting band I have come across on the internet, and their live shows are apparently pretty bananas. Because of a foot injury to PK14’s drummer, it will be AV Okubo and Mr. Particle instead in support. Hopefully Lava/Ox/Sea will still be freaking Shanghai’s favorite mid-sized venue too.

Zhijiang Dream Factory, 28 Yuyao Lu near Xikang Lu, Building B 4F inside New Factories,

9:00 start

120 RMB

Sunday:

Makoto Ozone

Jazz/classical/fusion party dude Makoto Ozone will be playing an all Gershwin program (An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F) with the Shanghai Symphony conducted by Chen Kangming. Again, if there were youtube I’d show you this video of him playing with Gary Burton. He sounds good in the video. Calling the concert “Jazz Piano” is kind of stretch, but we’ll give the old SHO a pass here because there’s not much else going on Sunday.

Shanghai Concert Hall, 523 Yan’an Lu near Xizang Lu

7:30 start

Tickets 50, 100, or 150 RMB
