It’s cold as balls, but the shows are flowing like hot baijiu. Don’t be overwhelmed, start having more fun. It’s spring-time after all, by the Chinese calendar.
When Hip-Hop Meets Jazz
Led by MCs Gauthier and Amin, and featuring La Conspiration (somehow every time I look at that I see constipation), is a night of free flowing lyricism and instrumentalism, in the grand tradition of two of America’s original art forms. Backing up the MC’s are Oleg, Jay, Alex, and me. The third set will be a jam featuring whoever wants to get up and rap, so come on by. The Illusion Trio opens.

Trash a Go-Go brings back Japan’s The Routes. Morgan has a nice write-up and some tracks. It’s garage, surf, and punk, and it’s always a good time. In support we find The Beat Bandits, The Instigation, and DJ B.O. Have you been to the new YYT yet?

Everybody is talking about the show last weekend at the new Live Bar, and at last I feel a burning need to check it out. Could this be the night? Well they’ve got Xiao Liao, DEE, Daxiong, and Wangyi on tonight, so there’s that.

No, it’s not everyone’s favorite English learning program coming to YYT, it’s Swedish poppy post-rockers, courtesy of New Noise. It’s on the steep side, but tours cost money, and these guys are apparently doing everything themselves. You gotta respect that. Opening for them are local post-rockers 21 Grams.

We Love Sugar Mama
Technically this is “We Love Sugar Mama presents Stairway to Heaven,” but that’s too weird for me. There have a already been a couple Sugar Mama memorial events, but I’m all for remembering her as much as possible. She was incredible. This one is going to have a whole mess of musicians and singers, namely almost all the Cotton Club people and a heaping tablespoon of JZ people. A guaranteed beautiful vibe.
