Editor's Picks Nov. 25-28 + Jazz Gossip

Hello friends, sorry for the long layoff between posts. I have a bit of jazz scene gossip/news, too, so skip on down if you don’t care.

Scene stalwart/Oberlin jazz mafia godfather JQ Whitcomb departed Shanghai last Monday, and word is that his Tuesday night spot will be taken over by a band led by Heidi Krenn and a band led by Toby Mak, alternating weekly. The Tuesday early set will be discontinued. My precious Wednesday early set with Oleg and Jhonny is currently up in the air, though Oleg will keep the Thursday early set. There has been word that other nights may be shaken up as well, starting next year, but that’s all totally rumor at this point.

In non-JZ news, Jessica has a contract playing at the newly opened Waldorf-Astoria on the bund, at their long bar. The room is pretty nice, and the cocktails are good too, if really expensive. We’ll see how sound and everything shakes up. I know Etienne is playing bass (!), and I think Jay is there too, but I’m not sure yet. It should be worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood. It will probably mean she’s not at JZ on Wednesdays as often, though I think she’ll probably still be coming through for some late sets.

Okay! On with the picks:

This is a charity event to benefit Shanghai migrant school scholarships, put on by BEAN and Shanghaiist. The cover goes to that, and maybe a cut of the drinks too, I don’t know. The lineup is totally sweet: Friend or Foe, Duck Fight Goose, Rainbow Danger Club, and Boys Climbing Ropes: give thanks!

Lune, 218 Xinle Lu near Donghu Lu

9:00 start

50 RMB cover (for charity)

DJ Toots

A Shanghai by Bus operation by Uprooted Sunshine. DJ Toots brings his Francophone Swiss hip-hop stylings to the Shelter, with support from the aforementioned Sunshiners.

The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu

10:00 start

40 RMB cover

(New) Peace Hotel Jazz Band

Theo, Charles, Curtis, and Andres having been killing it over there for a little while now, without too much mention from us. I’m not sure who the piano player is at this point, but Arlene should be joining them on vocals every Friday and Saturday. They are the hardest-swingin’ outfit in town, and have plenty of fire all through the band. You can go early and check out the Old Dudes Peace Hotel Jazz Band, though it’s pretty much a novelty thing.

Peace Hotel, 20 Nanjing Lu near the Bund

8:00-10:00 (old dudes), 10:30-1:30ish (Young Dudes)

No cover, expensive drinks

Super-Villains of Rock

A nice line-up, with variety across genres, but unity in aggro dudes: Friend or Foe, Fearless, Moon Tyrant, and X is Y. Be there!

YuYinTang, 851 Kaixuan Lu near Yan’an Xi Lu

9:00 start

35 RMB cover

Techno from Britain, brought to you and supported by Void. Myspace

The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Lu

10:00 start

50 RMB cover

C U Later

Straightforward, slightly precious folk, and Elliot Smith sounding folk-rock, from Cosy Bottle and Uncle Hu, respectively.

YuYinTang, 851 Kaixuan Lu near Yan’an Xi Lu

9:00 start

40 RMB cover
