Shanghai has been burning with news and events these days, pressure is rising, as a friend told me yesterday night “it seems like haunting season is on, and we can’t wait anymore for summer, we all want to be naked now!”… that’s what he said.
The cancellation of Strawberry, the chaos in Nanjing, and the silly mistake that cancelled Mr. Big for Midi in Shanghai has brought some stress around the scene, blogs, and 3D people, around China are going a bit nuts talking about these news, clearly it’s no good news when we hear a concert is cancelled. But really, is that terrible that cancellations are happening? I’m not sure it is. I think we need to be realistic, these kind of mistakes/situations/accidents will happen again, and again, bands cancelling a gig is not such a rare situation, it happens, it’s not what it happens more often (luckily) but it happens. And festivals cancelling, well, here it happens. We don’t like it, of course. But it’s not necessary to create such a big drama about this. Who really cares about missing Mr. Big’s show? Who knew that they actually were still doing music? or that they even existed?
I just think people, the mass of people, suffers of short term memory problems. Instead of getting stuck on what is not working well, and alarming like if we were being under alien attack or something like that, why better not to see that actually is good news that we are having all these projects, festivals, and concerts happening around us. Although not at all perfect yet, the situation of indie music here is way better than what it was 3 or 6 years ago. The worst enemy is frustration and useless alarming. I’m personally done with alarmed comments as if we were talking about national security issues. I love music, but really, let’s keep it real, shows are cancelled all over the world every year for different reasons, and music hasn’t stop to play because of that.
Yesterday night I talked with Kang Mao, the leader of The Subs, she mentioned how sad was that these cancellations were happening. Well, yes. But I asked “do you remember how many people went to a festival five years ago?” She was like … wow! … and then she told me they have played on every Midi since 8 years ago. So yes. She knows, 8 years ago Midi was a lonely tiny festival in China. But not anymore.
Anyhow. I just wanted to get out this of my heart.
And about music. Wow! I have to start with this amazing gossip I got yesterday night. (I think this one should be for Zack to fulfill his basic weekly ration of gossip). Check it out! … LOgO is coming back! … okay. I haven’t confirmed anything, I rather keep it as gossip for a couple of days (I like it like that). Anyway this is what I heard, TaiPei seems to be missing LOgO as much as we do, (we = many many many of us), so he looked for a new spot where to have it, and it seems he found it. Right by the new MAO Livehouse. (Viva Chongqin rd. and Jainguo rd. cross!) The not-yet-confirmed-if-real spot seems to be a two floor house on some place around Jainguo rd. And it will be named … guess … yes! LOgO. Isn’t this a sweet gossip or not? I love it.
Before going to the picks, one more thing I want to say, last night at YuyinTang Duck Fight Goose performed a memorable set to open for The Subs. Actually, I should say, it was revolutionary! I’m still enjoying the sounds I heard coming from Duck Fight Goose instruments, I loved every cycle of sound I heard from them. Now I can’t wait to hear the new album they are working on.
Ok. The picks now. And yes… this one will include a total conflict of interests (what the hell, we deserve it!).

TUESDAY MAY 10TH (Finally!)
YuyinTang – DynamoOn Layabozi celebrates 3 years of music
It all started four and half years ago actually. Then it took a year and half of hesitations, frustrated alliances, and serious evaluation of the mental sanity of the idea. Finally Mike said, “I’ll do it, I’ll write with you. Let’s just do it!” And so we started. It took us a lot of baijiu and actual layabozi to come out with the details of what we wanted Layabozi to be. Then we just hold our breath and jumped… to a swimming pool we didn’t even know if it had water or not. Now. Here we are, swimming on it like professional synchronized ducks (…well… almost like that). And we want to celebrate it and party A LOT!
The line up we got is pretty awesome: LON, The Song Dynasty, Androsace, Baijiu Robot (who we specially got to resurrect to party with us.. Baijiu and layabozi is one of those awesome combos), Thoma Cher, and maybe one or two surprises.
Besides the music, we opened our space to some nice ideas. We’ll have three artists exhibiting paintings and photography on the second floor: Nora, Ziggy, and our new talented pro-groupie photographer Squinzi. Plus a Vintage Corner managed by Super Sophia, and also Nora, Squinzi, and Cynthia. Girl power! Yay!
We are taking care of each detail that comes to our minds, we’ll have a nice selection of stimulants for all of you. Come to celebrate with us, we are happy, and excited about this, and we want to share this moment of love for music with you all. I’ll be moving up and down delivering alcohol and other stuff (!) to our amazing musicians, taking care that all is cool for everybody to have much fun, but don’t doubt on stopping me to have a beer and a chat. I’ll be using my extra powers this time to be everywhere at the same time.
One more thing, the moment to say thank you. First to all those either making music, or promoting it, and producing it in Shanghai and China. All and each of them are rare beings that believe a lot in their own imagination and dreams, and don’t give a shit about rejection, and handle frustration like if it were pineapple ice cream. All of them great adventurous, bold, and also fun addicts. Beautiful people all of them. Now many of them also are our dear friends too. To all, we want to thank you for opening your hearts and minds to us, and for sharing your work with us. We want say how much we are enjoying to be part of the music scene we are building in China. We are proud of it. We love it.
And last, I want to thank A LOT to all the people that has come to join Mike and me since we started Layabozi, each one of the guys that have become part of Layabozi’s team are people with a very special couple of ears, and a nice talent to communicate their thoughts, I think is right to say, just because it’s our birthday, that we are an incendiary collective of music lovers.
The celebration will start at 8pm.
Entrance: one person 30 rmb – two for 50 rmb – two people dating 30 rmb (someone at the door will be controlling this with very serious and professional methods)
Address: 851 Kaixuan rd. near YanAn rd.
There. No more self promotion, until… well… the next time(!)
