Pre-Editor's Picks Pick: Matthew Niederhauser at Dada's Photographer Night, hosted by Tim Franco

If you ever wondered who took those distinctive band portraits of Chinese underground rock bands in front of red walls, look no further. The photographer is one Matthew Niederhauser and the venue is the upstairs area of the club D-22. Niederhauser has taken hundreds of shots of bands at D-22 and elsewhere in China. My absolute favorite is the iconic shot of Hedgehog, at left. I’m not alone in that.

Mr. Niederhauser released a book of his Beijing music portraits called Sound Kapital last year, which was one of the reasons why Maybe Mars Records sent a bunch of their bands to New York and elsewhere in the U.S.; to tour and promote that book.

Niederhauser will be at Dada Wednesday night from 8:30, along with a lot of other photographers. The event is free.

Big ups to Morgan Short at SmartShanghai and Dan Shapiro writing for CNNGo for their illuminating interviews with the artist. You should check out their work, as always.
