This Saturday at The Shelter will be the launch on a new album released by the Shanghainese label PAUSE:MUSIC, Farewell Static, by Downstate.
Downstate, is Tom Oliver, a kind, and quiet cat that since years ago has been part of the electronic herd in Shanghai, participating with Amnesiac, ROM, and now enlisting with PAUSE:MUSIC to release Farewell Static.
Downstate explains “..the album was written completely by myself. No collaborations, no mastering engineer, just me up til early hours in my bedroom. On the album you’ll hear a mixture of bleepy synthesis, 8 bit sounds, and organic sounds like piano and glockenspiel… I made the record with software on laptop, some old Casio keyboards, glockenspiel, piano, gameboy, etc etc.”
Garreth Williams, co-founder of PAUSE:MUSIC, wrote a very good description of Downstate’s work, so good and accurate I think it almost says it all, it made hard for me to come out with a better presentation this time… “Always melodic and glitchy, his sound is always recognisable – childlike chimes battling against low fi broken beats and 80’s horror synths. After two years making a quite frankly unhealthy amount of unreleased music, the time has come to release his new record. Farewell Static is the result of his hermit lifestyle, hiding behind curtains in a dimly lit room, constructing layer upon layer of geeky electronica. The record spans from raw 8 bit sounds, to soft glockenspiel and piano, via eerie glitch hop and a little dash of 200bpm breakbeats here and there.”
The smart thing to do is to go to The Shelter to get Farewell Static this Saturday night. If you are not in Shanghai, since Saturday you can buy the physical CD from Downstate’s Bandcamp page, and download the digital version totally free. Also there you can find previous releases by Downstate.
To know better what we are talking about then, listen to this couple of tracks, a preview of he whole album (an album trailer, maybe?) Farewell Static, and its twelfth track “Splatterhouse”. And watch the video produced by Kim Laughton (Olivepixel) for the sixth track of the album, “The Heartache Was Visible”.
