Think of The Jar Family not so much as a band, but as a collective. Made up of singer/songwriters Max Bianco, Dali, Al Devon, Richie Docherty, Chris Hooks, Keith Wilkinson and Kerry ‘JubJub’ Edwards, the Jar Family was formed in 2010 in Hartlepool, England (think far northeast coast), and does business in robust, solid English folk. In fact, they describe their sound as “industrial” folk, which means, I think, that they look like a group of lads you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley, yet still have surprisingly whimsical taste in hats and overcoats.
Their music is invigorating—a type of bluesy folk rock but with a nice mixture of both acoustic and electric guitars plus plenty of other instruments and percussion, which makes them unexpectedly upbeat on their faster numbers, and then suddenly reflective on the slower ones.
Their first full album, The Jar Family Album, was released in January 2012 and since then they’ve been touring the UK and festival circuit more or less non-stop, and they’ve opened for some pretty big names like The Charlatans and Babyshambles, so they must be doing something right. But the best thing is that you can download their most recent single, “Getting Better” from their Soundcloud page totally free. Free music. Getting better indeed.
