Funky Afro Peruvian Sound from Radiokijada

April 15th, 2009 by ed

(Those are donkey mandibles they are holding, in case you are wondering).
Ever heard of Afro-Peruvian music before? Me neither. But whilst it may sound slightly like a contrived new-age genre (See, for example, Lost Music of Celtarabia), it turns out to have deep roots in the fusion of cultures created by African slaves brought [...]

The phone starts ringing. I’m going to ignore it before I remember I’m waiting for a delivery. “Hello,” I growl. “What’s that, Si? Oasis have cancelled? “Oh. Is this because of the … yeah … and the Tibet thing. Uh-hu. “Okay, well at least I won’t have to fork out an extortionate amount of cash to see a bunch of [...]

Pinch and Dubstep, Rattling Sub-Culture at The Shelter

March 26th, 2009 by mache

Drums and low sounds have been used since the very beginnings of human kind as a call from the earth to liberate our feelings, let go, flow, enjoy, release, and penetrate. Our chances to go to an aboriginal ceremony are low, really. But luckily, we have live music and live music venues, where musicians play these sounds for us. They are clever creators and powerful performers, their last album released in 2006 Endless [...]

2009 Brit Award nominations are out…

January 22nd, 2009 by ed

The Brits are the largest music awards in the UK. This year’s nominees have just been announced, with Coldplay and Duffy receiving the most, including for Best British Album. They are joined in that category by Elbow, Radiohead and The Ting Tings. If you’re not familiar with Brit-rock group Elbow, I thoroughly recommend checking out their latest album The Seldom Seen Kid, and lead singer Guy Garvey’s weekly radio show on BBC 6Music (most BBC material is available online for up to a week is after it is broadcast; check out Guy’s show here).
